Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)
The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a set of highly polymorphic genes in the innate and adaptive immune systems. Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) proteins are encoded by MHC genes.
The HLA complex is divisible into Class I and Class II alleles based on the structure and function of the encoded proteins. The extreme diversity of Class I and II alleles is responsible for their wide-ranging importance in disease states and immunity.
HLA Typing determines the compatibility of donors and recipients for organ and tissue transplantation. Mismatched donor and recipient organs or tissues can lead to their rejection by the immune system.
HLA Typing also determines one’s susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and reactions to vaccines and immunization.
